Wood Carvings of Nepal
Wood carvings of Nepal are created by clans of Newars -- the “old people” of Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, gracing traditional architecture of Nepal since the 12th century.Heritage sites, which were built during the Malla period (13th to 18th century), bare witness of the beautiful, old wood carvings and can, still, are admired today thanks to conservation efforts. And through the involvement of the youth, the Newars are successful in passing the craft to younger generations, making this old tradition live on.
Wood Carving Workshop
Daytime
This wood carving workshop will take you through the basics of the traditional Newari wood carving. No previous experience of working with wood is required!
You will be guided through preparation to carving in a traditional way. Experienced people are welcome, we can tailor the workshop to focus on any techniques or shapes you would like to improve on.
It will be taught in KhaumaTole, Bhaktapur in a small group of five, and you will be guaranteed a set of tools to use every class, with no need to share. Fee includes materials, tools and transportation.
